Hummingbird (released as Redemption in the US and Crazy Joe in France) is a 2013 British-American action thriller film written and directed by Steven Knight and starring Jason Statham.

Plot

Former Royal Marine Joseph "Joey" Smith finds himself homeless and traumatized after returning home from a tour of duty in Afghanistan. After being brutally beaten while living on the streets, Smith breaks into an apartment and assumes another man's identity and looks for help from a young nun named Sister Cristina. However, he soon gets caught up in London's criminal underworld. When his friend, a prostitute, is murdered by a client, he has to choose between vengeance and redemption.

Production

Hummingbird was almost entirely filmed throughout the hours of night. Filming sites included popular streets for homeless people and apparently sometimes even involved them. Statham stated that before filming started there was a lot of research into the mental health issues of his character. Some ex-servicemen were asked about their own experiences they had.

Hummingbird was released in the United Kingdom, United States (as Redemption), and France (as Crazy Joe) on June 28, 2013.

Reception

Based on 43 reviews Rotten Tomatoes gives a score of 51%, with the site's consensus being "While it certainly has more on its mind than the average Jason Statham action thriller, Redemption doesn't quite capitalize on its premise -- or on its star's strong, committed performance."
