Julia Cumming Biography

Julia Rachel Cumming (born January 16, 1996) is an American singer-songwriter, musician, model and former talk radio host who is currently the front-woman and bass player of the Brooklyn-based band Sunflower Bean. After studying classical singing at the Professional Performing Arts School in New York, she had planned to enroll in a music conservatory for college. But her plans changed when a casting director for Yves Saint Laurent discovered Sunflower Bean online and invited Ms. Cumming to walk in its fall-winter 2014 runway show.

Career

Cumming stepped into the Rock & Roll scene at the young age of thirteen in the three piece band Supercute! which was an alternative-anti-folk-bubblegum-girl-group-psychedelic-pop band from New York City that lasted from 2009 through 2013. She co-hosted alongside Rachel Trachtenburg in Trachtenburg's radio show titled Pure Imagination from 2012 to 2013. In 2013 Cumming joined the band Sunflower Bean which has already amassed a healthy following and a busy tour schedule that continues to grow. In 2014 they played over eighty shows. In 2016 they had played over 200 shows. Since first finding herself on tour as part of acoustic girl band Supercute! in her early teens, the magnetic 20-year-old has come into her own as an uninhibited frontwoman, providing a punkish counterpoint to an era that"?s seen the idea of the "?band"? edged out by manufactured pop individualism. At the same time as playing in Sunflower Bean, Cumming has built a burgeoning second career as a model, appearing in shoots for Yves Saint Laurent and others.
