Kidding is an upcoming American comedy-drama television series created by Dave Holstein, directed by Michel Gondry, and starring Jim Carrey and Catherine Keener that is set to premiere on September 9, 2018 on Showtime.

The series will mark the second collaboration between Gondry and Carrey, who previously worked together on Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.

Premise

Kidding will follow "Jeff, aka Mr. Pickles, an icon of children"?s television, a beacon of kindness and wisdom to America"?s impressionable young minds and the parents who grew up with him - who also anchors a multimillion-dollar branding empire. But when this beloved personality"?s family - wife, two sons, sister and father - begins to implode, Jeff finds no fairy tale or fable or puppet will guide him through the crisis, which advances faster than his means to cope. The result: a kind man in a cruel world faces a slow leak of sanity as hilarious as it is heartbreaking."

Production

Development

On September 14, 2017, Showtime announced that Kidding had received a straight-to-series order consisting of a first season made up of ten episodes. It was reported that Jim Carrey was set to star in the series and executive produce alongside Michel Gondry, who is also set to direct every episode. The series was created by Dave Holstein and will also be produced by Jason Bateman, Jim Garavente, Raffi Adlan, and Michael Aguilar. Holstein wrote the pilot and will serve as showrunner. On June 7, 2018, it was announced that series would premiere on September 9, 2018.

Casting

Simultaneously with the announcement of the series order, Carrey was announced as having been cast in the series lead. On December 14, 2017, it was reported that Catherine Keener had been cast as the series' female lead. On January 4, 2018, it was announced that Frank Langella had joined the main cast in a series regular role. On February 13, 2018, it was reported that Judy Greer had also joined the main cast. On March 15, 2018, it was announced that Justin Kirk had been cast in a recurring role. In May 2018, it was reported that Ginger Gonzaga and Bernard White were joining the cast in a recurring capacity. On July 9, 2018, it was announced that Grace Song had been cast in a recurring role.

On June 7, 2018, the series' first official trailer was released. About two weeks later, a teaser trailer featuring a song from the series was released. On August 6, 2018, the series' poster and the second official trailer were released.
