Robert Porterfield Brief Biography

Robert Huffard Porterfield, born on December 21, 1905, on the outskirts of Austinville, in Wythe County, Virginia. He died October 28, 1971, in Abingdon, Virginia. He was best known for founding the Barter Theatre there in 1933 during the Great Depression; in 1946, it was designated as the state theatre of Virginia. He served as artistic director of the year-round repertory theatre until his death in 1971.
