The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills is an American reality television series on Bravo that debuted on October 14, 2010. It is the sixth installment in the network's The Real Housewives franchise.

History

The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills was revealed in March 2010. The cast was announced on August 31, 2010, with former child actresses (and Paris Hilton's aunts) Kim Richards and Kyle Richards, heiress/businesswoman Adrienne Maloof, restaurant-owner and entrepreneur Lisa Vanderpump, Camille Grammer, who is the former wife of actor Kelsey Grammer, and Taylor Armstrong. The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills' first season ranked as the second highest rated first season series of the Real Housewives franchise ever in all demographics, averaging 2.42 million total viewers and 1.71 million adults 18-49. The series also received a 2011 Critics Choice Award for best reality series.

The series' second season renewal was announced in March 2011, with the premiere on September 5, 2011. The entire season one cast returned, with Brandi Glanville and Dana Wilkey introduced to the series as a "Friends of the Housewives". Camille Grammer left the main cast of the series after season two. The second season was re-edited after the death of Taylor Armstrong's husband, Russell, who committed suicide on August 15, 2011.

The third season premiere aired on November 5, 2012. Brandi Glanville was upgraded to main housewife, and Yolanda Foster was added to the series. Marisa Zanuck was introduced as "Friends of the Housewives", and Camille Grammer held the same title. Faye Resnick officially joined the show as a "Friend of the Housewives" mid-season.

The series was officially renewed for a fourth season on April 2, 2013. Kyle Richards, Kim Richards, Taylor Armstrong, Brandi Glanville, Lisa Vanderpump, Yolanda Foster are all returning. Adrienne Maloof will not return to the series for the fourth season, nor did she attend the season three reunion that was filmed March 1, 2013. Camille Grammer and Faye Resnick will not be returning. Marisa Zanuck later revealed that producers did not ask her to return for the fourth season.

TMZ posted a video of musician Rod Stewart stating that his wife, Penny Lancaster, turned down an offer from Bravo to be a part of the cast for the fourth season. Speculation began that Lisa Rinna would be joining the series for the upcoming season, but a representative for Bravo has stated there is "no truth" to the story. E! News confirmed on June 22, 2013, that Carlton Gebbia and Joyce Giraud have joined the cast as housewives while Taylor Armstrong has been demoted to a reduced role. Season 4 will premiere on November 4, 2013.

Lisa Vanderpump

Lisa Vanderpump was born and raised in London but lived in Monte Carlo and Cheltenham before moving to California. She was a full-time drama student by the age of nine and starred in numerous television shows and films as a child. Her film debut was playing the daughter of Glenda Jackson in the 1973 dramedy A Touch of Class. In 1982, she married Ken Todd six weeks after meeting him; she was 21, and he was 37. They have two children: daughter Pandora (1986) and son Max (December 7, 1992). With their children now young adults, their four dogs Pikachu, Lollipop, Pomeranian Gigolo (Giggy), and Cocker Spaniel Buki are now their babies.

Vanderpump had bit-roles throughout the 70s, 80s, and 90s, including portraying "Baywatch Nights babe" Margo Curtis. She was featured prominently in '80s music videos "Poison Arrow" by the band ABC; and "(What) In The Name of Love", by the duo Naked Eyes.

Vanderpump published the book, Simply Divine: A Guide to Easy, Elegant, and Affordable Entertaining, released November 8, 2011.

In 2013, Vanderpump began starring in her own The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills spinoff, Vanderpump Rules, a reality series about her restaurant SUR. She was eliminated second on the sixteenth season of Dancing with the Stars Her partner is former Dancing with the Stars Australia professional, Gleb Savchenko.

Vanderpump used to live in the gated community of Beverly Park, where she lived across the street from former housewife Adrienne Maloof. Before filming the third season, she moved in to a new home in Benedict Canyon. Both homes are located in the Beverly Hills Post Office area of Los Angeles.

Kyle Richards

Kyle Richards was born in Hollywood, the daughter of Sharon Kathleen (née Dugan; 1933"2002) and Kenneth Edwin Richards (1917"1998). Kyle's siblings are Kathy Hilton (née Avanzino, later Richards; born 1959) and Kim Richards (born 1964). Nicky and Paris Hilton are her nieces. Kyle began acting as a baby star: she appeared in several episodes of the television series Little House on the Prairie; throughout the '70s she guest-starred in several television series and acted in a few horror films: The Car, Eaten Alive, and Halloween; and later she appeared in the Disney children's horror film The Watcher in the Woods. Subsequent roles include Nurse Dori on the hit television series ER and a supporting character part in the film National Lampoon's Pledge This! She has also appeared in episodes of her niece Paris Hilton's reality series, The Simple Life and My New BFF. She is married to Mauricio Umansky and the couple has four daughters: Farrah (from a previous marriage), Alexia, Sophia and Portia.

Kim Richards

Kim Richards is a former child actress best known for her work in Disney films. She starred in such movies as Escape To Witch Mountain (1975) and No Deposit, No Return (1976), and appeared in various television series, including Nanny and the Professor, James at 15, Hello Larry, Diff'rent Strokes, CHiPS, and Magnum P.I. After co-starring in the feature film Tuff Turf (1985) with James Spader and Robert Downey Jr., Kim decided to go into early retirement and devote her time to raising a family. She has four children: Brooke (25), Whitney (21), Chad (20), and Kimberly (16). Kim, who is currently single, is the younger half-sister of Kathy Hilton (née Avanzino, later Richards; born 1959), elder sister of fellow Housewife, Kyle Richards (born 1969), and aunt to Hilton's daughters, Paris and Nicky Hilton.

As of May 2013, working on various business endeavors including a jewelry and water bottle line that donates proceeds to charity.

Brandi Glanville

Brandi Glanville is a former fashion model; she is also a mother to two sons, Mason and Jake, with her ex-husband Eddie Cibrian. She is currently unemployed from work and spends her time focused on the television series.

Glanville is the first housewife in the entire franchise to start as a "Friend of the Housewives" and to be promoted to series regular. She appeared in The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills for season 2 because the show's producers liked her and wanted to give her a test drive on the series, and she made the cut with her drama and feisty attitude.

She has said on the show that for more than 17 years, she traveled the world as a fashion, runway, and print model. She has appeared in Glamour and Cosmopolitan. Glanville's debut novel, Drinking and Tweeting: and Other Brandi Blunders, co-authored with Leslie Bruce, was released February 12, 2013.

Glanville and Cibrian's public breakup and divorce (and his infamous affair with LeAnn Rimes) were well-documented by the media beginning in 2010.

Yolanda Foster

Yolanda H. Foster is a former model and fourth wife to producer and songwriter David Foster. Foster was born and raised in Papendrecht in the Netherlands. After her father died, when she was aged seven, Foster helped to support her single mother and brother. She became a dishwasher at a local Chinese restaurant at the age of thirteen. She was discovered by world famous modeling agent, Eileen Ford, at the age of sixteen and left the Netherlands to become an international model. She lived and worked in Hamburg, Milan, New York, Paris, Sydney, and Tokyo. Foster married wealthy property developer Mohamed Hadid in 1994 and moved to Los Angeles, where they raised their three children: Gigi, Bella and Anwar. By 2000, she and Hadid had separated; Foster moved to a horse farm in Montecito with her young children and ran an interior design business from home. Court documents revealed after Foster and Hadid divorced, Hadid paid Foster $3.6 million in cash, gave her several mansions along with several expensive cars and $30,000 in monthly child support.

Yolanda married David Foster on the November 11, 2011. Yolanda and David currently reside in Malibu, and Yolanda runs a company Hopelessly Romantic.

Joyce Giraud de Ohoven

Joyce Giraud de Ohoven is a Puerto Rican actress and model who was twice been named Miss Puerto Rico and finished as the second runner up in the 1998 Miss Universe pageant she has also appeared in series that include Baywatch and House of Payne.

Girauld joined the series for its fourth season.

Carlton Gebbia

Carlton Gebbia appeared in movies such as Eyes of the Serpent before acquiring guest roles on television shows such as Suddenly Susan and The Young and the Restless. She later appeared in the 2000 comedy movie Time Share, and starred in the 2001 thriller Pretty When You Cry.

Married to David Gebbia, owner of financial services company StockCross, Carlton made the transition from show business to designing.

Gebbia joined the series for its fourth season.

Camille Grammer

Camille Grammer is of Italian and English origin. She first found fame as a dancer, model, and actress. After marrying Hollywood actor Kelsey Grammer in 1997, she worked as a producer and a writer for their company Grammnet Productions. Together, they have a daughter, Mason, and a son, Jude. After a public separation documented in the first season of the series, in July 2010, Camille filed for divorce, seeking primary physical custody of the couple's daughter and son, in addition to child and spousal support. The divorce was finalized on February 10, 2011.

Originally, Camille left the show completely and Brandi Glanville, originally a "Friend of the Housewives", was promoted to regular Housewife to take her place. However, Camille then announced that she would return to the show for season three as a "Friend of the Housewives". Grammer, who didn't attend the reunion for season three, will not be returning to the series for season four due to her desire to keep her personal life away from the media and to spend more time with her family.

Adrienne Maloof

Adrienne Maloof is an Albuquerque, New Mexico, native who moved to Beverly Hills 15 years ago. Adrienne, her mother, and four brothers comprise the Maloof dynasty, whose multi-faceted sports and entertainment enterprise includes the Palms Casino Resort in Las Vegas, Nevada; the Sacramento Kings; the Sacramento Monarchs; Maloof Productions' Maloof Music; and the annual Maloof Money Cup skateboarding event. She was earlier married with Dr. Paul Nassif, a rhinoplasty specialist and cosmetic surgeon who previously appeared on E!'s Dr. 90210. The couple have three sons. In July 2012, Adrienne confirmed reports that she and her husband, Paul, were separating after nine years of marriage. On August 28, 2012, Paul filed for divorce seeking joint custody of his and Adrienne's three sons. They reached a divorce settlement on November 8, 2012.

In March 2013, Adrienne announced that the third season of the housewives would be her last.

Taylor Armstrong

Taylor Armstrong was born in Independence, Kansas and moved to Beverly Hills eight years ago. She prides herself on being a devoted mother to Kennedy Caroline (born 2006), her daughter with former venture capitalist Russell Armstrong. Taylor is portrayed as being extremely passionate about both her business and her philanthropic work. She serves as Chief Creative Director of BeautyTicket.com and volunteers for the 1736 Family Crisis Center; she has been an advocate for victims of domestic violence since 2004.

Taylor was born "Shana Hughes", but has changed her name several times; she has also been known as "Shana Taylor" and "Taylor Ford". After allegations of spousal abuse and alleged money troubles, her husband Russell Armstrong took his own life and was found by Taylor and his landlord on August 15, 2011. A month later, in September 2011, Taylor alleged that she suffered severe physical abuse during her marriage.

Armstrong's memoir, Hiding from Reality: My Story of Love, Loss, and Finding the Courage Within, was released February 7, 2012.

As of the fourth season, Armstrong appears on the series in a limited capacity. It was announced on August 23, 2013, that Armstrong is engaged to lawyer John Bluher. Bluher proposed to Armstrong while the couple were on vacation in Punta Mita.

Ratings

Season 1 premiered on October 14, 2010, scoring over 1.5 million viewers and the series' ratings continued to grow, attracting 3.7 million viewers between the 9 pm and 10 pm airings for the January 13, 2011 episode, making it the number one telecast among adults 18-49 versus all cable competition in the time slot. The January 20, 2011, finale became the highest-rated Season 1 episode with 4.2 million when combined with multiple evening reruns.

Season 2 averaged 2.17 million viewers.

Ratings for season 3 dropped significantly from previous seasons. The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills hit a season high of 2.35 million viewers and a 1.1 rating (18-49 aged viewers) on November 26, 2012. then plunged 34% to a two-season low on March 11, 2013 with 1.56 million viewers and a 0.7 18-49 rating.

DVD Releases

The entire first season was released on DVD in summer 2011 exclusively at Target. Both seasons of the show are available on iTunes.
