Zambia's Cherise Makubale wins first 'Big Brother Africa'

In the first edition of Big Brother Africa, the winner turned out to be pre-show popularity poll leader Cherise Makubale from Zambia. In popular voting, which was conducted as "one vote per country," Cherise received six of the 13 votes and was the only finalist to win more than two.

The New York Times reports that Africans are glued to their TV sets -- if they have them -- to watch this Sunday's finale of Big Brother Africa. Although less than 1 in 20 of Africa's 900 million inhabitants own a TV set, it is estimated that around two-thirds of those (or 30 million) are watching BBA, which takes place in a house in South Africa. BBA has been the primary topic of conversation throughout the English-speaking parts of the continent, which is also where most of the TVs are located.
'Big Brother Africa' ban overturned in Malawi as South Africa's Abby leaves

The BBC reports that the High Court of the African nation of Malawi declared that the country's parliament overstepped its powers when it banned Big Brother Africa from the state TV network for immorality. However, the TV network has not decided whether it wants to resume airing the show, since the Malawian contestant is one of the five contestants booted from the 12-person Big Brother Africa house so far.

In the latest twist, Reuters reports that Ugandan houseguest Gaetano Kagwa, whom we previously noted engaged in an on-air hookup with South African houseguest Abergail ("Abby") Plaatjes, has become a national hero in his country, with people gathered around TV sets to follow his latest antics.
