America's Next Top Model 3 - Episode 8 Summary

'The “Image & Talking” Episode' By Isabelle Murray

This time around, we start by seeing Tyra in presumably her bed, talking to her mother.  Tyra is very distressed that the person who got eliminated last night was super-food-obsessed-girl (Cassie) who had admitted to Tyra that she had an eating disorder.  However, when Tyra tried to offer some help, she did not want any.  Therefore, a very wise mom said that there is only so much that Tyra could do anyway and that, ultimately, it is up to super-food-obsessed-girl to do some introspection.  A very teary-eyed Tyra fades off.  This looked staged, obviously.  It’s very possible, though, that Tyra really did feel bad and really needed her mom to comfort her on that one.  Who knows?

Then, we see the house and girls complaining about how they are scared of being cut and stuff.  Gosh!  I am so tired of seeing that!

Anyway, super-dependent-girl (Ann) opens the door and in walks a bunch of people who all greet her.  She answers them cordially and then says to the camera that they sounded like she should know them yet she did not.  There were three people:  two are from an agency that specializes in teaching celebs (or would-be celebs) how to publicly speak and the other person is an Emmy winner stylist.  The girls will get to learn how to speak to the media and the stylist will evaluate what type of image they are projecting.  Each girl goes individually to talk to the media teachers while another girl is meeting with the stylist.

Bottom line for all girls, they have no sense of style…  or rather no style that the stylist liked.  For instance, while everyone loves that super-African-girl (Yaya) is very close to her African roots, the stylist thought that there was not enough variety in her clothes and the tones were too earthy.  The stylist was especially disgusted by super-dependent-girl’s wardrobe; there were no skirts, no dresses, just tomboy looking clothes.  Oh, and she didn’t like too much super-modern-girl’s (Norelle) clothes either because she thought them too childish.

When it comes to the learning how to speak to media aspect, super-African-girl (Yaya) says that she just graduated from an ivy league college so she feels like she can talk about anything but she doesn’t to what extent she can do that in this business.  The teachers tell her that this type of attitude, the Miss Know-it-all, will not get her the attention that she wants and people will actually not like her for it.  Funny, when the girls were talking at the beginning of the show, they were saying how they didn’t like that super-African-girl had answers for everything.  When it was super-girl’s (Eva) turn to talk to the teachers, they immediately identify her as a diva; this is funny.  Oh, I was about to forget super-cute-eyes-girl (Amanda).  From the footage that we see, it seems like the first thing that she mentions is how she is legally blind.  The teachers say that she has a unique opportunity and she can be a role model and stuff like that.

Some girls are pretty flustered by the comments that they received.  Most decide that they do not want to change anything.

Later, the girls go out to dinner where they are eventually met by Tyra.  They get to ask whatever question they want to.  Super-modern-girl (Norelle) asks Tyra how much their lives will change after this and stuff because she didn’t think that it was going to be that way.  Tyra then says that the girls have the unique opportunity to hear what the judges have to say whereas, normally, this is what is said after a model leaves the building.  So they can take the feedback and work on improving.  Super-plus-size-girl (Toccara) asks how Tyra feels about plus size models in the industry.  Tyra compares it to the first black models that paved the way.  She also points out that she still has to work hard because she is black.  For stuff to happen and in order to break boundaries, super-plus-size-girl doesn’t need to be as good as the other girls, she needs to be much better because she will need more to wow the people and get respect.  It’s unfortunate but that’s the way it is.
