Sonia Granados and Nick Pendergrast appeared on Season 4 of Married at First Sight.
They decided to stay together at the end of the show.
However, following about a year of marriage, Sonia and Nick announced their decision to file for divorce in March 2017.
Nick revealed in July 2017 that his girlfriend Heather Yerrid was expecting twin babies.
Heather gave birth to the twins, a daughter named Layla and a son named Logan, two months early at a hospital in Louisville, Kentucky in December 2017. Both infants weighed less than four pounds at birth.
"We are in awe with the twins. This entire experience has been surreal," the couple told People in a statement at the time.
"If you would have asked either of us if this is what we thought life would look like in a year, we would have laughed."
However, in July 2019, Nick revealed he was in a severe work accident in January that had left him partially paralyzed and unable to walk.
"When [Heather] arrived to the ER, she was told they didn't know if I was going to make it through the night. January 22nd, I was found submerged in water for hours, with severe hypothermia, multiple pelvic fractures, severely comminuted sacral fractures, Morel-Lavallee, and more," he wrote in an Instagram posting.
"It's been 6 and a half months and I finally feel like I've gotten a straight answer about what the future may hold. The nerve damage caused by the blunt trauma has left me partially paralyzed."
According to Nick, he had to move away from his family for his rehabilitation.
"I had to relocate to a place that had the best doctors to save my life, and the best environment to regain any functionality in my lower body. The past 6 months have been lonely, depressing, scary, stressful, and difficult," he wrote.
"I have the support of my family. Heather brings one child at a time to see me since she can't yet travel with two."
"I am fighting every day to stay sane, motivated, and in high spirits. It's the hardest thing I've ever had to do and I wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy. I have gained empathy, compassion, and gratitude through this and hope to gain more. If nothing else, I just want to be able to walk again."
Nick addressed his paralysis in another Instagram posting he made in August 2019.
"Aquatic therapy is my favorite right now," he captioned a video showing him getting therapy in a pool.
"Since there is less gravitational force in water, I am able to move my leg more freely. That's the closest I've got to walking without assistance. I trust myself more because I can not fall."
"It's almost like an out of body experience since I've been paralyzed now for 7 months. The majority of the time I am making an effort to focus on my gait pattern instead of what I am feeling. My goal is to balance that out in time."
Nick has not directly addressed his injury in any of his subsequent postings, however his recovery still appears to be ongoing as all his more recent postings -- including numerous family photos -- show him posing in a sitting position.
