Utopia formally added two new members and lost another during Tuesday night's episode of the new Fox reality competition.

The series features pioneers and strangers living on an isolated ranch as they attempt to build a brand new society over the course of a year.

The episode began with the Utopians deciding whether they'd like Kristen Vanstrom, a 23-year-old entrepreneur from Jamestown, NY, or Rhonda Deniston, a 48-year-old tea party activist from Oceanside, CA, to stay in Utopia. Both women entered the living situation with knowledge one of them must go home. They had tried to plead their case and explain why they'd better the lives of their fellow pioneers.

Kristen had argued she'd be able to make the Utopians money, as they needed a business model and someone to execute such a plan in connection with the outside world. Rhonda had a passion for the show's concept and getting to know the pioneers as friends. She planned to farm and prove she's a hard worker.

However, the Utopians determined they wanted Kristen to stay with them and Rhonda to leave the oasis.

But little did the group know they were about to lose a vital member of their society. Jonathan Lovelace, a 44-year-old pastor and high school coach from Church Hill, TN, broke his thumb and needed surgery. A medic explained two pins must be placed at the site of injury, so he couldn't heal in the dirty environment of Utopia. The medic suggested Jonathan would need six to eight weeks to recover at home.

Jonathan was very popular in Utopia, as many pioneers turned to him for guidance and strength. It was clear he'd be missed.

Also during last night's episode, Taylor Vaughn made his grand entrance. The 23-year-old construction worker from Omaha, NE, was sent in to Utopia to replace Dave Green, a 31-year-old ex-con from Queens, NY.

Dave had opted to quit the show in a previous broadcast because he didn't get along with his peers. After a couple brutal fights, Dave left the ranch but eventually begged for forgiveness and a chance to return. The group came to the conclusion Dave didn't really deserve a second chance because the mood of the ranch was better without the tension he had dragged into it.
